December 9, 2009 (Numbers 26-36)

God takes vows seriously.

Numbers 30:1Then Moses summoned the leaders of the tribes of Israel and told them, “This is what the Lord has commanded: 2 A man who makes a vow to the Lord or makes a pledge under oath must never break it. He must do exactly what he said he would do.

I know that's important for the "big" vows (marriage, etc.), but was reminded again it's important for the "little" vows (I won't waste any more time following the Tiger Woods drama). It's pretty amazing to me how easy it is to "waste time". As I read a few days earlier, we are to make the most of our days, and remember how short a time we have here on earth compared to eternity.

As I continued to read I was again reminded about how God expects us to follow Him whole heartedly, and that He expects us to live differently than those around us.

Numbers 32:11 ‘Of all those I rescued from Egypt, no one who is twenty years old or older will ever see the land I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, for they have not obeyed me wholeheartedly. 12 The only exceptions are Caleb and Joshua, for they have wholeheartedly followed the Lord.’

Numbers 33:51 “Give the following instructions to the people of Israel: When you cross the Jordan River into the land of Canaan, 52 you must drive out all the people living there. You must destroy all their carved and molten images and demolish all their pagan shrines. 53 Take possession of the land and settle in it, because I have given it to you to occupy. 55 But if you fail to drive out the people who live in the land, those who remain will be like splinters in your eyes and thorns in your sides. They will harass you in the land where you live. 56 And I will do to you what I had planned to do to them.”

  1. There is an interesting thing in history about driving all of the people out. In ancient cultures the prize of war were men and women. These were the greatest .By giving those up they give up the greatest honor.
